Extension Myth or Fact: The Truth About Extensions

Feb 10, 2023

There are tons of misconceptions out there about extensions, so we’re here to set the record straight, and tell you everything you need to know to make an educated decision about whether or not extensions are right for you.

You first need to know that not all extension methods are the same. Depending on your needs, some methods may be better suited for you than others, so make sure to do your research on ALL methods if you’re still unsure.

For the purpose of this blog, we will be specifically discussing the SaGrah Method, and SaGrah Luxe hand-tied extensions. Here’s a little background on our extensions and method:

  • SaGrah Luxe came to be when our founder, Sarah O’Flaherty, began looking for her own personal solution to her hair concerns. Sarah tried just about every extension method out there, and she was left feeling unsatisfied with her options. She wanted to create quality extensions that she would feel confident providing to her clients and herself.
  • All of our SaGrah Luxe Hair is 100% European-sourced human Remy hair. Our hair is single donor, ethically-sourced cuticle-intact, and silicone free. Because Remy hair is the most manageable, resilient, and natural-looking type of hair, it is the finest quality available for hair extensions. The word "Remy" or "Remi" hair refers to how the hair was cut to lessen tangling and matting. AKA, your Remy extensions look and feel like YOUR hair!
  • The SaGrah method involves using the concealed beaded method, providing you with the most seamless installation possible.

So now that you have a little bit of an idea of who we are and what we do, let’s dive into debunking some extension myths.

Extensions are super hard to hide (other people are going to be able to tell you to have them) – MYTH

Yes, in the past, we admit extensions haven’t always been the most discreet, but extensions have come a LONG way. Invisible bead hand-tied extensions are designed specifically to blend effortlessly with your natural hair. This means you’ll have a much easier time styling your hair, and you can even wear it up!!

My head will hurt or feel heavy after I get extensions – MYTH

We’re not gonna sugarcoat it, you may leave the salon with a little bit of a headache… but trust us when we tell you it only lasts about an hour or two.

We get where you’re coming from with the concerns about your head feeling heavy… “all that extra hair will probably weigh me down”… but we can assure you, it won’t! SaGrah Luxe extensions are 100% human hair, so while they can add volume and length to your hair, there’s no extra weight involved.

Extensions are safe to wear and are not damaging to your hair if installed properly – FACT

IF installed properly by a certified professional, the risk of damaging your hair with SaGrah Luxe extensions is slim to none. In fact, your hair may actually grow and become healthier after your installation, and here’s the reason: your extensions take the brunt of the heat, and the color or bleach so your natural hair has the opportunity to grow, while you still get to rock the styles you love.

My extensions will never tangle – MYTH

Your extensions are just like your natural hair – they need to be washed and brushed on a regular basis to keep them looking good. Extensions are an investment, so you need to take care of them! Sleeping in a protective style like a loose braid and brushing your hair as often as possible can help prevent tangles and matting.

You MUST go to your maintenance appointments – FACT

Like we mentioned before, your SaGrah Luxe extensions are an investment. While we love seeing you at the salon, your move-up and maintenance appointments are more than just an excuse to see you every 6-8 weeks. Your natural hair will grow, and your extensions will slowly start to move away from your scalp, and it just doesn’t look right. So don’t ignore those move-ups, you need them!

There are certain products that can damage or shorten the lifespan of my extensions – FACT

When it comes to your extensions, you should ALWAYS use Sulfate-Free products. Sulfates tend to strip the hair of its natural oils which will make the extensions dry, brittle, and prone to tangling. Instead, use products that are free of sulfates to maintain proper moisture and luster. We also encourage the use of oils, sprays, and leave-in conditioners applied from mid-shaft down to promote the health and hydration of your hair.

Falling asleep with wet hair can cause damage to my extensions – FACT

Falling asleep with wet hair is NEVER encouraged, whether you have extensions or not. When our hair is wet, it is in a much more fragile state, and the friction caused by tossing and turning all night can cause major breakage. With extensions, you are much more likely to cause tangling between the wefts, which can weaken your extensions and cause shedding. So PLEASE dry your hair before getting your beauty sleep!

I can never go swimming in a chlorinated pool, or go in the ocean ever again if I get extensions – MYTH

Yes, it is recommended to avoid salty or chlorinated water… but we’ve got news for you babe… you should be doing this ANYWAYS! As we’ve said, SaGrah Luxe extensions are made with 100% ethically-sourced human hair, so the recommendation to stay away from salty or chlorinated water has more to do with keeping your hair looking and feeling healthy and less to do with the extensions themselves. Chemicals like chlorine and salty water are incredibly stripping in terms of moisture and vitamins from your hair, and obviously, we want your hair to stay as healthy as possible. But this doesn’t mean you have to give up swimming in your pool and taking trips to the beach for the rest of your life. Just make sure to take the necessary precautions! Keep your hair up and out of reach from the water, wear a bathing cap, or coat your hair with tap or fresh water and your favorite leave-in conditioner before submerging your hair to create a barrier between the water and your hair.

It’s hard to care for extensions – MYTH

Taking care of your extensions is just like taking care of your natural hair. You should be washing your hair every 4-6 days, brushing your hair as often as possible, and using oil or hydrating products daily. As long as you give your hair the attention it needs, caring for your extensions should not be a burden to you.

I have thin hair, so I can’t get extensions – MYTH

This is SO not true. Thin hair doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get extensions. It may just mean you need to have a conversation with your stylist about how many wefts your hair can support. For example, the average head of hair needs between 6-12 wefts. However, depending on the length and thickness of your client's hair, this can vary. Clients with thinner hair may only need 4-8 wefts. But by all means, extensions could still be a very realistic option for you even if you don’t have a particularly thick mane to start off with.

We hope this clears everything up for you, babe! Extensions are perfectly healthy for your hair as long as they’re installed properly, and you can still do everything you did before – just with better hair!
